society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Samuel Phillips Huntington was a famous American political scientist.

He spent much of his life studying how governments and people act. He was a professor at Harvard University for many years. He also worked for the U.S. government under President Jimmy Carter. In that role, he helped plan security for the National Security Council. His ideas helped shape how Americans think about politics and the military. He was a very well-known teacher and writer.

Many of Huntington's ideas focused on how societies change over time. He wrote a famous book in 1957 called "The Soldier and the State." This book looked at how civilian leaders should control the military. In 1968, he published "Political Order in Changing Societies." He argued that when societies grow and modernize, they can become messy. He believed that if political systems do not grow fast enough, violence might happen. He often advised different governments on how to handle these hard changes.

Huntington's most famous idea came in 1993. He called it the "Clash of Civilizations." He argued that the world had changed after the Cold War ended. He believed future wars would be fought between different cultures. He identified eight or nine major civilizations around the world. These included the Western, Islamic, Sinic, and Hindu civilizations. He thought these cultural groups would be the main reason for global conflict. This idea caused many people to debate his theories.

Huntington also studied how democracy spreads across the globe. In 1991, he wrote a book called "The Third Wave." He said a large wave of democracy started in 1974 in Portugal. This wave helped more than 60 countries in many different places. These places included Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. He even won the Grawemeyer Award for this important work. His studies helped people understand how nations become free.

Even today, many people study Huntington's work in college. He is the second most cited author in American political science classes. His ideas are even used to train officials at the State Department. He wrote about many topics, including American identity and immigration. He passed away on December 24, 2008, at the age of 81. His life was filled with big questions about how the world works. He remains a very important figure in the study of politics.
