He lived during a time of great change called the Industrial Revolution. Colt wanted to build an "impossible gun." He heard soldiers say a gun could not fire many times without reloading. He wanted to prove that this was not true. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1814. His father, Christopher Colt, was a businessman.

Samuel grew up reading science books. These books inspired him to do things others thought were impossible.

Colt found his big idea while traveling on a ship.

He saw tools called capstans and windlasses on the deck. These tools used a ratchet-and-pawl mechanism to turn. A ratchet is a device that lets something move in only one direction. This gave him the idea for a revolving cylinder. This cylinder holds many bullets. When the hammer is cocked, a part called a pawl turns the cylinder. Then, a bolt locks the cylinder in place so it lines up with the barrel. This made his gun much better than older designs.

Colt had a hard time finding money for his ideas.

He traveled across America and Canada as a performer. He used a gas called nitrous oxide to give science shows. He called himself "the Celebrated Dr. Colt." He used these shows to practice his public speaking. He learned how to be a great salesman during this time. He even used art and gifts to promote his products. These methods were very new for that time period.

In 1835, Colt went to England to get patents. A patent is a legal paper that protects an invention. He received his first patent in the United Kingdom. Later, he received a U.S. patent on February 25, 1836.

He started a company in Paterson, New Jersey. He used a new way to make things called interchangeable parts. This means every part is made to be exactly the same. If a part breaks, you can easily swap it for another one. This helped him use an assembly line to make guns very fast.

Colt's inventions changed how things were made.
