He was a businessman, a journalist, and a leader in his church. He is most famous for being California's first millionaire. Brannan was also the first person to tell everyone about the California Gold Rush. His life was full of big changes and many big choices. He moved from the east to the west to find a new start. This journey shaped the history of the state of California.

Brannan's path to success involved many different steps. He first learned the trade of printing. This skill helped him start newspapers later in life. He also became a leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1846, he led a large group of people on a ship named the Brooklyn. They sailed to California to find a safe place to live. Once there, he used his money to buy large amounts of land. He also opened stores to sell things to new people arriving in the area.

His story began long before he reached the West Coast. Brannan was born in Saco, Massachusetts, in 1819. When he was fourteen, he moved to Ohio to live with his sister. In 1842, he and his family joined his church in Kirtland, Ohio. He later moved to New York City to print a newspaper called The Prophet. After some hard times in the east, he decided to lead a group to California. He arrived at Yerba Buena, which is now San Francisco, in July 1846.

Brannan's career in California was full of famous moments. He started the California Star, the first newspaper in San Francisco, in 1847. In 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill. Brannan bought up all the mining tools he could find. He bought pans for 20 cents and sold them for $15 each. This helped him make $36,000 in just nine weeks.

He later served in the California State Senate in 1853.

Many things we know about California today started with people like Brannan. He helped build the first wharf in San Francisco. He even bought the first steam locomotive in California to help people travel. He also helped start the first public school in the area. However, his life ended quite differently than it began. He had many disagreements with his church and his family. By the time he died in 1889, he was poor and lived in obscurity.
