Brannan's life was defined by rapid shifts in wealth and social status. He moved from a printer's apprentice to a powerful political figure in the early days of California. His actions helped shape the early development of San Francisco and the surrounding regions. Throughout his life, he navigated complex religious, financial, and social landscapes.

Brannan's career began with the technical skill of printing. He learned this trade in Painesville, Ohio, after moving there at age fourteen. This expertise allowed him to establish newspapers, including the California Star in 1847. The California Star was the first newspaper in San Francisco and played a vital role in local communication. Later, this paper merged with another to become The Daily Alta California in 1848. His ability to control information through the press was a key part of his influence.

Religious leadership was another major pillar of Brannan's life. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 1846, he led an expedition of Mormons to California aboard the ship Brooklyn. He brought essential items like a printing press and a flour mill to aid colonization. However, his relationship with the LDS Church was often difficult. He was disfellowshipped due to his involvement with a San Francisco vigilance committee. He also faced questions regarding the handling of church tithes, which were donations given to support the church.

Brannan's most significant financial success came during the California Gold Rush. In early 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill by employees of James W. Marshall. Brannan recognized the economic potential of this discovery immediately. He bought up large quantities of mining supplies, such as picks, shovels, and pans. He famously purchased pans for 20 cents and resold them for $15 each. This strategy allowed him to earn $36,000 in only nine weeks.

Following the gold discovery, Brannan expanded his business empire through real estate and trade. He used his profits to purchase large tracts of land in San Francisco and Sacramento. His Sutter Fort store was highly successful, selling $150,000 worth of goods in a single month during 1849. Brannan also established trade routes with China, Hawaii, and the East Coast. He even purchased land in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1851. His aggressive land speculation contributed to rising prices, which caused tension with local residents.

Brannan was also a participant in the early political and social structures of California. He was elected to the first town council of San Francisco. In 1851, he helped organize the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance to address local crimes. He later served as a Senator in the California State Senate in 1853. To support infrastructure, he purchased California's first steam locomotive to aid railroad construction. He also worked with other capitalists to build the first wharf in San Francisco.

Despite his immense wealth, Brannan's later years were marked by significant losses. A divorce required him to sell much of his real estate to pay his wife her share of their assets. His involvement in the Squatters' Riot of 1850 also caused social friction. The riot was a period of conflict between landowners and people living on land without legal titles. Ultimately, the man who became California's first millionaire died in 1889 in relative obscurity and poverty. His life remains a complex study of the opportunities and risks found in the American West.
