He was born in Westborough, Massachusetts, on December 8, 1765. Whitney was a very hard worker from a young age. At age 14, he ran a nail business in his father's workshop. He later studied at Yale and graduated in 1792. Even though he was a smart student, he often lacked money. This led him to travel to the South to work as a tutor.

In 1793, Whitney created a machine called the cotton gin. The word "gin" is short for engine. Before this, cleaning cotton by hand was a very slow task. A person could only clean one pound of lint a day. Whitney's machine used a wooden drum with hooks on it. The hooks pulled the soft cotton fibers through a wire mesh. The seeds were too large to fit through the mesh. Because of this, the seeds fell out while the clean cotton passed through.

Whitney's invention had a huge impact on the United States. The cotton gin made growing cotton very profitable in the South. This helped the economy grow, but it also had a dark side. The machine made the system of slavery much stronger and lasted longer.

Because many people copied his design, Whitney lost much of his profit to legal battles. He spent a lot of time in court fighting over his patent. His cotton gin company eventually went out of business in 1797.

After losing money on cotton, Whitney turned to making muskets for the army. In 1798, he took a contract to make 10,000 to 15,000 muskets. He was not a gun maker before this, so it was a new job. During this time, he began to promote the idea of interchangeable parts. This means making parts that are exactly the same. If one part breaks, you can easily swap it for another identical part.

While Whitney did not invent the idea of interchangeable parts, he helped make it popular. This idea helped create the American system of manufacturing. It later helped the North win the Civil War because they could make weapons quickly. Whitney worked on these machines and inventions until he died in 1825. His life shows how one invention can change a whole country.
