Colt's most significant invention was a practical revolving firearm. While traveling on a ship called the Corvo, he observed capstans and windlasses. These maritime tools used a ratchet-and-pawl mechanism to rotate heavy loads. Colt applied this concept to a rotating cylinder that held multiple chambers. When the hammer of the gun is cocked, an attached pawl turns the cylinder. A locking bolt then secures the cylinder in perfect alignment with the single barrel. This mechanism was a major improvement over earlier pepperbox designs that required manual rotation. This design ensured the chamber was properly indexed for every shot.
Colt's success relied heavily on his revolutionary manufacturing processes. He was a pioneer in the use of interchangeable parts. This means that every individual component of a firearm is made to be identical to the others. Because the parts were made by machines, they could be swapped easily if one broke. This concept allowed Colt to move toward an assembly line manufacturing process. This method was much more efficient than traditional hand-crafting. It allowed for the rapid production of complex machinery at a much larger scale.
Before his success in firearms, Colt had a varied and difficult early life. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1814. His childhood was marked by the loss of his mother to tuberculosis. He spent time as an indentured laborer and later worked in his father's textile plant. To fund his inventions, Colt became a traveling performer. He used nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, to conduct scientific demonstrations. 
Securing legal protection for his work was a major hurdle. In 1835, Colt traveled to Europe to obtain foreign patents. He successfully secured a patent in the United Kingdom before returning to the United States. On February 25, 1836, he was granted his U.S. patent for a revolving gun. This legal protection gave him a monopoly on revolver manufacture until 1857. To build his business, he formed a corporation of venture capitalists. He also established his first manufacturing plant in Paterson, New Jersey.
Colt's business faced several early challenges and financial struggles. His first company in Paterson struggled with sales and high spending. Colt was known for spending corporate funds on expensive clothes and lavish gifts for clients. He even used company money for fancy dinners to influence potential customers. The company faced a setback during the Seminole War in Florida. Soldiers found the hammerless design of the early revolvers difficult to use and often broke them. Despite these failures, Colt reworked his design to include an exposed firing hammer.
His revolvers eventually saw widespread use in major historical conflicts. The Texas Rangers ordered 1,000 revolvers during the American war with Mexico. During the American Civil War, his Hartford factory supplied firearms to both the North and the South. His weapons were also used extensively during the settling of the western frontier. His influence extended globally, as seen when he gifted a revolver to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. 
Colt's legacy connects the worlds of science, engineering, and modern business. He proved that scientific principles could be turned into successful industrial products. His methods of advertising and product placement were precursors to modern mass marketing.
