On November 24, 1904, he successfully demonstrated the first working track-type tractor near Stockton, California. During World War I, Holt's inventions became vital to the Allied war effort. The tractors replaced horses for hauling heavy artillery and supplies. They also moved long trains of freight wagons over unimproved dirt tracks. By 1916, the British military was using about 1,000 Holt Caterpillar tractors. Holt's name remains honored in Stockton, California, through a street and a preparatory academy. His mechanical genius changed how humans move heavy loads across the planet.
