He worked closely with a partner named Horace Smith. Together, they started a company called Smith & Wesson. This company became very important in history. They even helped start the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Wesson was very successful at his job. By the year 1865, he earned over $160,000 a year.

His inventions worked by using new ways to hold ammunition. In 1854, Wesson and Smith made the Volcanic. This was a lever-action tool that came in both pistol and rifle forms.

Later, they made a small revolver. This revolver used a rimfire cartridge. A cartridge is a single part that holds everything needed to fire. This was the first successful kind in the whole world. They also used a special patent called a "rear loading cylinder." This helped make the tools work much better.

Daniel Wesson grew up in Massachusetts. His father, Rufus, was a farmer who made wooden plows.

When Daniel was eighteen, he became an apprentice. He worked for his brother, Edwin Wesson, in Northborough. Edwin was a maker of target rifles and pistols. Daniel also married a woman named Cynthia Maria Hawes in 1847. They had four children together. One of his sons, Frank, died in a train accident on the Central Vermont Railway.

Many important things happened during Wesson's long career. In 1856, his company began making the cartridge revolver. In 1899, they introduced the .38 Military & Police.

This specific model is one of the most famous in the world. It has been made continuously since 1899. Many police forces and military groups use it today. Wesson also gave $100,000 in 1904 to help build a hospital. This hospital was later named Wesson Memorial Hospital.

We can still see the impact of his life today. Wesson lived in a huge mansion in Springfield, Massachusetts. The house was built with pink granite and had a red roof. His family continued the business for many years. His grandson, Douglas, helped create the .357 Magnum in the 1930s. His great-grandson, Daniel B. Wesson II, also worked in the family business for 30 years. Even his old summer home in Northborough is still known by many people. It was once a restaurant called White Cliffs.
