Sailor Jerry worked hard to make tattooing safer and better. He made his own special colors for tattoo ink. He also created custom needle shapes. These new needles put less trauma into the skin. He was among the first to use needles only one time.

His studio was also a leader in cleanliness. He used an autoclave to sterilize his equipment. This machine helped keep everything very clean for his clients.

His journey as an artist began a long time ago. He was born in Reno on January 14, 1911. As a teenager, he traveled across the country on freight trains. He first learned to tattoo using a hand-poke method. A man named "Big Mike" taught him in Alaska. Later, a man named Gib "Tatts" Thomas taught him to use a machine.
