He is best known for hosting "The Joy of Painting." This show aired on PBS and CBC from 1983 to 1994. People loved him for his calm and soft voice. He spoke to the camera as if he were talking to just one person. He believed that everyone has talent inside them. He taught people that they could all become artists with practice. To him, art was a way to create a happy world.

Ross used a special way to paint called the wet-on-wet technique. This is also known as alla prima, which means "first attempt" in Italian. He did not sketch his pictures before starting. Instead, he painted scenes directly from his imagination in real time. He painted on top of wet layers of oil paint. This meant he did not have to wait for the paint to dry. He used large brushes and even a painting knife. This helped him finish a whole landscape in about thirty minutes. He often used a limited number of colors and tools.

His love for painting grew during his time in the military. Ross joined the United States Air Force in 1961. He served for twenty years and became a master sergeant. While stationed at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, he saw many mountains and snow. These beautiful views became the main themes in his art. He even practiced his quick painting style during his short work breaks. He eventually earned more money from selling paintings than his military salary. This allowed him to retire from the Air Force in 1981.

After the military, Ross became a professional art teacher and salesman. He learned his technique from a man named Bill Alexander. A woman named Annette Kowalski saw his work and helped him start a company. They called it Bob Ross Inc. The company grew into a huge business worth $15 million. His famous television show started as a pilot in 1982. Soon, 60 PBS stations signed up to show his classes. He often made "happy little trees" and other scenes on the show. He even had a squirrel friend that appeared in some episodes.

Today, Bob Ross is still an icon in popular culture. Even though he passed away in 1995, people still watch his shows. You can find his episodes on streaming services like Hulu. Many fans still enjoy his relaxed way of teaching. Some of his original paintings are very rare and valuable. One painting called "A Walk in the Woods" has been valued at millions of dollars. People enjoy his work because it feels like a peaceful escape. His message about "happy accidents" still inspires many new artists today.
