Most people know him as the creator of the famous cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants. This show started on Nickelodeon in 1999. It has become the fourth longest-running animated series in America. Hillenburg's work helped people see the wonder of life under the sea. He wanted to share the joy of the ocean through his drawings.

His journey into animation began with his love for sea life. As a child, he enjoyed exploring tide pools and watching films about the ocean. He later became a marine biology teacher at the Orange County Marine Institute. To help his students, he wrote and drew a book called The Intertidal Zone. This book featured characters based on real animals found in tide pools. These very same characters and ideas helped him create the world of SpongeBob later on. He even worked as a fry cook in Maine, which inspired his character's job.

In 1989, Hillenburg made a big change in his life. He left his job as a teacher to study animation at the California Institute of the Arts. He studied under Jules Engel, who became a mentor to him. During his time as a student, he made short films like The Green Beret and Wormholes.
