Jerry Thomas was a famous American bartender from the 1800s. Many people call him the "father of American mixology." This title means he helped make mixing drinks a real art. He was known for his great skill and showmanship. People often called him "Professor" Jerry Thomas. He turned bartending into a professional and creative job. He wanted people to see his work as something special.

Making a drink was a big performance for Jerry. He used flashy tools made of solid silver. Some of his tools and cups even had precious stones on them. He would juggle bottles, cups, and mixers while he worked. He famously made a drink called the Blue Blazer. To make it, he lit whiskey on fire. He passed it between two glasses to create a bright arc of flame.

Jerry's life was full of many different adventures. He was born around 1830 in Sackets Harbor, New York. As a young man, he learned his trade in Connecticut. He even traveled to California during the Gold Rush. While there, he worked as a gold prospector and a manager. He later moved back east to settle in New York City in 1851. He ran many different saloons throughout his long career.

In 1862, Jerry published a very important book. It was called "Bar-Tender's Guide." This was the first drink book ever published in the United States. It collected recipes that people used to share only by speaking. The first edition included recipes for the Fizz, the Flip, and the Sour. He updated the book many times over his life. In 1876, he included the recipe for the Tom Collins.

Jerry's influence can still be seen in the world today. Many people still use the recipes he wrote down long ago. Some places, like the Jerry Thomas Speakeasy in Italy, use his name. Even a gin in Italy is named "Del Professore" to honor him. His work helped change how people think about drinks. He showed that a bartender could be a famous and talented artist.
