Collins is credited as a founder of the American Traditional tattoo style. This style uses bold designs that became popular across the United States. His work helped transform tattooing into a more professional and artistic craft. He combined different cultural influences to create something entirely new and lasting.

Collins made several technical improvements to the tattooing process. He developed his own pigments to expand the range of ink colors available. He also designed custom needle formations to reduce skin trauma during the procedure.

He was a pioneer in using single-use needles for better hygiene. Additionally, his studio was among the first to use an autoclave. An autoclave is a machine that uses heat and pressure to sterilize equipment. These innovations made the art of tattooing much safer for everyone.

His artistic style featured many distinct and recognizable types of imagery. He drew classic nautical symbols like anchors, sailing ships, and swallows. He also used motifs like eagles, falcons, and various birds of prey.

Other common designs included roses, snakes, skulls, and knives. He even drew more unique items like motor heads, pistons, and the "Aloha" monkey. These diverse subjects helped create the wide appeal of the American Traditional style.

Collins's life was full of travel and diverse experiences. He was born in Reno on January 14, 1911. As a teenager, he traveled the country by hopping on freight trains. He first learned the hand-poke method from a man named "Big Mike" in Alaska. Later, Gib "Tatts" Thomas taught him how to operate a tattoo machine.

At age 19, he joined the United States Navy. His time at sea exposed him to Southeast Asian art. He eventually moved to Hawaii in the 1930s.

In Hawaii, his studio became a central part of the local culture. His final location was at 1033 Smith Street in Honolulu's Chinatown. At that time, it was the only tattoo studio on the entire island.

He blended the traditions of sailor tattoos with Japanese art styles. This combination created the specific look of the American Traditional movement. His influence remains significant in the modern tattooing community today.

His legacy is celebrated through various media and public events. His "flash" drawings, which are pre-made tattoo designs, have been exhibited in museums. These include the Musée du quai Branly in Paris and the Field Museum in Chicago.

Since 2015, Honolulu has hosted the annual Sailor Jerry Festival every June. This event features live music, art exhibits, and fashion shows. There is also a "Birthday Bash" held every January to celebrate his birth. These festivals aim to educate people about his life and contributions.

Today, the name Sailor Jerry is connected to many different commercial products. A company called Sailor Jerry Ltd. uses his art on clothing and items like sneakers and playing cards.

The company also produces a spiced navy rum. This brand was later purchased by William Grant & Sons in 2008. This purchase led to a legal dispute with his widow, Louise Collins. She sued regarding the unauthorized use of his name and imagery. The lawsuit was eventually settled in 2020. His life continues to impact both the art world and global commerce.
