The story of the Safavids began as a religious group.

They were part of a Sufi order. This group was centered in a place called Ardabil. A leader named Safi al-Din Ardabili was very important. He was a revered leader in the 1300s. Later, the group became known as the Safaviyya. It grew from a small group into a large movement. They used religious ideas to spread throughout the land.

As time passed, the group sought more than just spiritual power.

Leaders like Shaykh Junayd wanted to hold real power. He sought help from the Aq Qoyunlu, or White Sheep. This helped build the strength needed to rule. Eventually, Ismail I became the first king in 1501. He made Twelver Shi'ism the official religion of the empire. This was a very big change for the people.

To fight their battles, the Safavids used strong warriors.

These warriors were called the Qizilbash. This name means "red-head" in Turkic. They wore special red headgear to show who they were. The Qizilbash gave the empire its military strength. While they fought, ethnic Iranians helped run the government. This mix of people helped the empire function well. They created a system of checks and balances to manage the state.

At its peak, the empire was incredibly vast.
