Sacrum

The sacrum is a very important part of your skeleton. It is a large, triangular bone located at the base of your spine.

This bone sits in the upper, back part of the pelvic cavity. It rests right between the two wings of your pelvis. The sacrum does a big job by supporting your spine. It also makes a safe space for your spinal nerves to pass through. Because it is so strong, it helps hold your body steady.

This bone forms in a very specific way as you grow. It starts as five separate bones called sacral vertebrae. Between the ages of 18 and 30, these pieces fuse together into one solid bone.

The sacrum connects to four other bones in your body. It joins with the last lumbar vertebra just above it. At the bottom, it connects to your coccyx, which is your tailbone. On each side, it connects to the ilium of your hip bone. These connections happen at the sacroiliac joints.

Scientists have studied how these bones grow since the very beginning. In an embryo, the parts that make the spine develop from head to tail. By about day 29, the sacral parts begin to appear.

By day 30, the last three pairs of parts form the coccyx. Sometimes, a person might be born with a condition called spina bifida. This happens when the vertebral arch or the spinal canal does not close all the way. Another condition is called caudal regression syndrome, where the lower spine does not develop fully.

The sacrum has three different sides with unique shapes. The pelvic surface is concave, which means it curves inward. This side has four ridges and four holes called foramina. These holes allow sacral nerves and arteries to pass through.

The dorsal surface is the back side and is convex, or curved outward. It has a ridge in the middle called the median sacral crest. The lateral surface is the side of the bone. It has an ear-shaped part called the auricular surface that fits against the hip.

Many different animals have a sacrum just like humans do. Even though they look different, they follow a similar way of growing.

For example, a dog has a sacrum made of three fused vertebrae. A horse has a sacrum made of five fused vertebrae. Even a rat has four pelvic vertebrae that fuse together. These bones help all these animals connect their spines to their hips. It is a clever design found in many living things.
