The abdomen is a very important part of the body. In humans, it is the front part of the torso. It sits between the thorax, which is your chest, and the pelvis. The space inside this area is called the abdominal cavity.

This cavity is a large space enclosed by muscles and bones. The abdominal wall forms the front and sides. Part of the vertebral column protects the back. The diaphragm is a muscle that connects this area to the chest.

Many vital organs live inside the abdominal cavity. Most of the digestive system is found here. This includes the stomach, small intestine, and the colon. The appendix is also attached to the colon. Other parts like the liver and pancreas help with digestion. They use small tubes called ducts to work.

The spleen and the kidneys are also located here. Even the urinary bladder and ovaries are found in this region. A thin layer called the peritoneum lines the whole space. This membrane helps cover and protect the organs.

Three layers of muscles make up the abdominal wall. These muscles work together to provide strength. The external oblique is the outermost layer. The internal oblique is the middle layer. The transverse abdominal is the deepest layer. These muscles criss-cross to make the wall strong.

There are also long, flat muscles called the rectus abdominis. These run up the front of the belly. They are covered by a thick sheath of tissue. Some people call these muscles "six-pack" abs. They help you bend your spine forward.

These muscles do many hard jobs every day. They help protect your soft inner organs. They also help you keep good posture. You use them to bend your body sideways or rotate your trunk. They are even used for breathing. They help you push air out when you cough or sing.

These muscles also help with other functions like urination. When you exercise them, you can improve your balance. Staying strong helps prevent back pain and injuries.

Doctors use special tools to look at the abdomen. They might use an endoscopy to see inside. This is a way to examine the digestive tract. They can also use medical imaging to see the organs. Doctors look at surface landmarks to find where organs sit. One landmark is the umbilicus, which is your navel. Another is the linea alba, a line down the middle.
