A sabot is a special tool used in guns and cannons.

It helps a small, thin projectile fly very fast. A projectile is the part that is shot out of the gun. Many projectiles, like long arrows, are too thin to fit a big barrel. The sabot fills the extra space. It acts like a sleeve around the thin part. This allows the gas from the powder to push against a large area. A larger push creates more speed.

Once the projectile leaves the barrel, the sabot falls away. This happens because of air pressure or spinning forces. Now, the thin projectile can fly through the air with very little drag. Drag is the force that slows things down.

There are different kinds of sabots. A cup sabot holds the base and sides of a projectile. An expanding cup sabot uses spinning to open up and fall off.

A spindle sabot is used in many modern big guns. It uses several parts, called petals, to hold the projectile. These petals help center the part in the barrel. Sabots can be made of many things. Small guns use plastic. Large guns use strong metals like aluminum or steel. Some even use carbon fiber.
