A shotgun slug is a heavy piece of metal.

It is fired from a shotgun. Most slugs are made of lead or copper. They are much heavier than a rifle bullet. For example, a common 12 gauge slug weighs about 1 ounce. This is much more mass than a small rifle bullet.

Slugs are used to hunt large animals at short ranges. Because they slow down fast, they are safer near people. This helps prevent stray pellets from hitting homes. Some slugs use fins to help them fly straight. These fins make the slug spin as it moves. This is called aerodynamic stabilization.

Other slugs use a special part called a sabot. A sabot is a plastic piece that holds a smaller slug. This part helps the slug spin in a rifled barrel. The sabot falls away after the slug leaves the gun. This way makes the slug very accurate. Some slugs are even made of rubber. These are used as less-lethal tools.
