He was a mathematician and a librarian. He was born on August 12, 1892, in a place called Siyali. He studied math at Madras Christian College. He wanted to be a math teacher for his whole life. He taught at many different universities in India. He even wrote papers about the history of math. His work changed how the whole world organizes information.

In 1923, a university in Madras needed a new librarian. There were 900 people who applied for the job. Ranganathan did not have special training in libraries yet. He only read one article about libraries before his interview. He got the job in January 1924. At first, he felt very lonely and bored. He even asked for his math teaching job back. To help him decide, he went to London to study.

While in London, Ranganathan saw a Meccano toy set. This toy gave him a big idea for sorting books. He created the colon classification system. This system uses different parts to describe a topic. For example, a book about war in India has many sides. It could be about war, or history, or India. His system helped people find exactly what they needed. He also wrote the Five Laws of Library Science in 1931. These laws helped make libraries better for everyone.

Ranganathan was a very hard worker. He often worked 13 hours every day. He worked seven days a week without any vacations. He even went back to work the day after his wedding! He worked at the University of Madras for twenty years. Later, he taught at Banaras Hindu University. He personally organized over 100,000 items there. In 1957, the Indian government gave him the Padma Shri award. This was for his great work in library science.

Many people call him the father of library science in India. He wanted libraries to be open to all people. He worked hard so women and minorities could learn too. He also helped start many library groups in India. His birthday, August 12, is now National Librarian Day in India.
