He was a math teacher and a librarian. He was born in 1892.

At first, Ranganathan only knew about math. In 1924, he became a librarian at the University of Madras. He went to London to study how to run libraries. While there, he saw a toy set. This toy gave him an idea for a new way to sort books. He called this the colon classification system. It helped people find information more easily.

He also wrote the Five Laws of Library Science. These rules helped make libraries better for everyone. He wanted women and minorities to have more access to books. He worked very hard. He often worked 13 hours every day. He even worked the day after his wedding!

Later, he taught at other universities. He helped start new ways to study library science in India. The Indian government gave him a special award in 1957.
