Colon classification

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A man named Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan made a way to sort books. It is called Colon Classification. This system helps libraries group books by their topics. It is used a lot in libraries in India. The name comes from the colon mark used in the codes.

This system uses five main parts called facets. These facets help describe a book. The first is Personality. This is the main subject of the book. The second is Matter. This is the substance or material of the subject. The third is Energy. This covers how things work or act. The fourth is Space. This is the place where things happen. The last is Time. This is the date or season.

To make a code, you combine these parts. You use marks like colons to separate them. The system has 42 main classes. These include things like Math, Biology, and Music. For example, a book about lung medicine in India in 1950 would use many facets. It would list the medicine, the lungs, and the place. It would also list the time and the work being done.
