Born on August 12, 1892, in Siyali, Tamil Nadu, Ranganathan began as a mathematician. He earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Madras Christian College. His original career goal was to teach mathematics at the university level. He served on mathematics faculties in Mangalore, Coimbatore, and Madras. During this time, he published research papers focusing on the history of mathematics. He eventually transitioned into librarianship through a unique series of events in 1923.
The University of Madras sought a new University Librarian to manage a poorly organized collection. There were 900 applicants for this single position. Interestingly, none of these applicants had formal training in librarianship. Ranganathan applied because his research background satisfied the committee's requirements. He had only read one article about libraries in the Encyclopædia Britannica before his interview. Despite his initial reluctance and a feeling of boredom in the role, he accepted the appointment in January 1924. 
To decide if librarianship was his true calling, Ranganathan traveled to London. He studied at University College London, which offered Britain's only graduate degree in library science. While there, he observed flaws in the popular Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. He noticed that the DDC often relied on "intellectual laziness" by using single headings. Ranganathan proposed the Acknowledgment of Duplication to address this. This concept states that any classification implies at least two different ways to view a single datum. For example, a book on "warfare in India" could be classified under "warfare" or "India."
This realization led to his most famous invention: the colon classification system. He gained the inspiration for this faceted system from watching a Meccano toy set in a London shop. Faceted classification allows a subject to be broken down into many specific parts or "facets." Instead of one rigid number, a librarian can describe every aspect of a topic step-by-step. This was a massive advancement for information retrieval technology at the time. In 1931, he also published his Five Laws of Library Science to guide the profession. 
Ranganathan was known for his incredible work ethic and dedication to India. During his twenty years at the University of Madras, he often worked 13-hour days. He worked seven days a week and took no vacations. Even after his wedding in November 1928, he returned to work the very next afternoon. He lobbied for free public libraries and a national library for the country. He also advocated for open access to education for women and minorities. His efforts helped make information more available to all social groups.
His later career included many prestigious roles and academic positions. He served as a professor at Banaras Hindu University from 1945 to 1947. During this time, he personally classified over 100,000 items in the university collection. He also held an honorary professorship at the University of Delhi from 1949 to 1955. In 1957, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Shri for his valuable contributions. He also served as the vice-president for life of the Library Association of Great Britain. 
In his final years, Ranganathan lived in Bangalore and established the Documentation Research and Training Centre. He served as its honorary director for five years starting in 1962. The Indian government later named him a National Research Professor in 1965. Ranganathan passed away on September 27, 1972, due to complications from bronchitis. His legacy continues through the many systems and laws that still guide librarians today. His life serves as a bridge between the study of mathematics and the science of information.
