The Rust Belt is a large area in the United States. It sits mainly around the Great Lakes and the Mid Atlantic regions.

Some people say it includes northern Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. It also covers parts of Pennsylvania, New York, and Wisconsin. Other definitions include states like Kentucky, Maryland, and West Virginia. This area does not have one exact border. Instead, it describes a group of places that went through big changes. People call it the Rust Belt because of how it feels when factories close.

For a long time, this region was the industrial heart of America. It was once known as the Steel Belt or the Factory Belt. The area grew because it had many ways to move goods. Water canals, railroads, and paved roads linked everything together.

Iron ore from Minnesota and Wisconsin moved to meet coal from Pennsylvania. This helped create a massive industry for making steel. The region also became a center for making cars and mining coal. Many people moved here to find these important jobs.

Many different groups of people helped build these big cities. Immigrants came from places like Italy, Poland, and Russia. They moved here to work in the large industrial facilities. African Americans also moved to these cities during the Great Migration. They were looking for better jobs and new opportunities. Cities like Chicago and Detroit grew very fast because of this. In fact, Chicago grew from a small trading post into a huge city.

Starting in the 1950s, the region began to face hard times. Manufacturing peaked in 1953, but then it started to go down. One reason was that people began using oil and gas instead of coal. Other countries, like Germany and Japan, also started selling more steel. In the 1970s, a gas crisis made people want smaller cars. This meant they bought fewer cars made in the old Rust Belt factories.

High costs also made companies move to the Sun Belt or overseas. Some factories used new machines that needed fewer workers to run.

When factories closed, life in the cities changed a lot. Many families moved away to find work in other places. This left many big buildings empty and abandoned.

Cities like Detroit, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh saw their populations fall. These cities also had less money to fix roads or schools. Today, the Rust Belt is still a very important part of American history. Many leaders still talk about the economic needs of these states. It remains a place where people remember a very busy industrial past.
