The Sun Belt is a large and sunny region in the United States. It stretches across the Southeast and the Southwest parts of the country.

Many people define this area as the land south of the 36°30′ north line. This includes states like Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, and Texas. Some people even call five of these states the "Sand States." This name comes from their many beautiful beaches and wide deserts. It is a place where the weather often stays warm.

Different types of weather make the Sun Belt very special. You can find dry deserts in places like Arizona and Nevada. Other areas, like South Florida, have a tropical climate. Some parts of the region have humid subtropical weather with lots of rain. There are also Mediterranean climates found in California. Because the weather changes so much, there are many different ecosystems. These include grasslands, temperate rainforests, and even tropical rainforests.

Many people have moved to the Sun Belt over the years. After World War II, more people came to find warm weather. The invention of air conditioning made summer life much more comfortable. This allowed many new businesses to open in the region. Industries like oil, aerospace, and defense began to grow quickly. Today, high-tech companies are also very important in California and Texas. Many people also move here to retire and enjoy the sun.

This region is home to many huge and busy cities. Seven of the ten largest cities in the U.S. are in the Sun Belt. Los Angeles is the largest metropolitan area with over 13 million people. Other major cities include Houston, Phoenix, and Atlanta. Texas and California are especially strong, with many large companies located there. In fact, 12 of the 15 fastest-growing cities in the U.S. are in this region. The population continues to change as new people arrive.

While the Sun Belt is a wonderful place, it faces some hard jobs. One big worry is having enough fresh water for everyone. As more people move to places like Texas and Florida, water becomes harder to find. Some areas, like California, are looking at new ways to get water from the sea. The region also protects many special living things. Some animals, like the American crocodile, are endangered and need our help.
