Urban decay is a term used to describe a city falling into disrepair.

It is also sometimes called urban blight or urban rot. This happens when parts of a city stop working well. Buildings may become broken or stay empty for a long time. This can lead to a sad or desolate feeling in a neighborhood. Many different things can cause a city to decline at once. It is rarely just one single problem that causes the change.

Many factors work together to create this process. When factories move away, people lose their jobs. This is called deindustrialization. Without work, many people move to new towns or suburbs. This leads to population decline in the old city. Other things like high crime or pollution can also happen. Even urban wildlife like pests might move into empty buildings. When people leave, there is less money to fix roads or schools.

This history is tied to how people live and work. During the Industrial Revolution, many people moved to cities for factory jobs. This caused city populations to grow very fast. Later, economic changes left these cities in a weak position. In the United States, many people moved to the suburbs after World War II. Government loans helped families buy houses in these new areas. This left many city centers with fewer people and less money.

Different countries show different examples of this issue. In France, large housing projects called "grands ensembles" faced hard times in the 1980s. In Germany, the town of Hoyerswerda lost about 40% of its people after 1990. Italy had the Vele di Scampia, a large housing estate in Naples. It was built to create a community but faced many problems after a 1980 earthquake. In South Africa, the Hillbrow neighborhood in Johannesburg also saw many changes and businesses moving away.

Understanding urban decay helps us see how cities change over time. It shows how big decisions, like where to build a highway, can change a street forever. For example, building the Gowanus Parkway in the U.S. put a concrete slab over Third Avenue. This left the lively street in shadow and took away its bustle.

Today, some cities are working hard to fix these areas. They use redevelopment to make neighborhoods lively and strong once again.
