Urban decay happens when a city or part of a city falls apart.

Buildings may break or stay empty. This can make a place look sad. It is often called urban blight.

Many things cause this. In the past, many people moved to cities for factory jobs. Later, those factories moved away. This left many people without work. When jobs leave, people often move to new towns too. This is called population decline.

New roads can also change a city. A big highway might run through a busy street. This can cast the area into shadow. It can make the street lose its life. In the United States, many people moved to the suburbs. This left city centers with fewer people.

Other problems can happen. Crime may go up. Pollution can make the air or water dirty. Even animals like pests move into empty spots.

In some places, it is hard to fix these areas. Some cities struggle to get new money for repairs. But people still work to make cities better again.
