Deindustrialization

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Deindustrialization is a big change in how a country works. It happens when a region loses its heavy industry. This means fewer factories make goods like steel or cars.

Many things cause this change. One reason is new technology. For example, industrial robots can do tasks once done by people. This means fewer workers are needed in factories.

Another reason is where jobs go. Some companies move to other countries. They do this to find lower wages. This is often called offshoring. New ways to travel and talk also make this easy.

Sometimes, the way people spend money changes. People may buy more services. Services are jobs like banking or helping others. As people buy more services, the share of factory jobs falls. This shift can happen even if factory jobs are growing. Some see this as a sign of a mature economy. Others see it as a sign of hard times. For example, Bethlehem Steel was a huge steel maker. It stopped most work in 1982 and closed for good in 2003.
