Valentino was celebrated for his intense, romantic, and exotic screen persona. His expressive performances helped redefine the concept of male stardom. People argued about his impact on masculinity and modernity during the 1920s.

Before his film success, Valentino built a career through dance.

Valentino also became famous for performing the Argentine tango. His role in the 1921 film "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" helped popularize this dance style in America. Later, he toured with Joan Sawyer, even performing before President Woodrow Wilson.

He was born on May 6, 1895, in Castellaneta, Italy. His father, Giovanni Guglielmi, was a cavalry captain and a researcher in bacteriology. His mother, Marie Berthe Gabrielle Barbin, was French. Valentino attended the Dante Alighieri college in Taranto. He later earned a degree from the Agricultural Institute of Saint Ilario in Liguria. He originally hoped to join the Royal Naval Academy as a cavalry officer. However, he failed the physical exam by only one inch. This disappointment led him to a more bohemian life in Europe.

In 1913, Valentino emigrated to the United States for a fresh start.

He departed Genoa on the S.S. Cleveland on December 9, 1913. Unlike many immigrants, he traveled as a first-class passenger. He arrived in New York City on December 23, 1913. He did not go through Ellis Island because first-class passengers were processed on ships. In New York, he initially worked as an apprentice landscape gardener. When that failed, he held several menial jobs. He even worked as a car washer and swept sidewalks. At his lowest points, he slept on benches in Central Park.

His rise to film stardom was rapid and filled with major hits.
