She began by practicing how to fall safely in an old London church. She studied ballet, gymnastics, and the trapeze, which is a swinging bar used in the air. By age twelve, she was already touring with an acrobat troupe in places like France. To perform as a cannonball, she was launched from a spring-style cannon. She would fly through the air and land safely in a large net. She also did high dives and walked on tightropes without even using a balancing pole.

Her journey into the spotlight began in the mid-1800s in London.

She was born in 1860 to a father who worked with circus performers. When she was only five, she even played a role in a theater show. By 1877, at age 17, she performed her famous cannon act at the Royal Aquarium. This act was created by a man named William Leonard Hunt, also known as The Great Farini. He had previously used a catapult to launch performers before deciding to use a cannon. This new way of performing made Zazel a massive star across Europe.

Richter's career included many impressive numbers and famous locations. She performed for huge crowds that sometimes reached tens of thousands of people. She toured through North America with famous groups like the Barnum & Bailey circus. Her act was so popular that even the Prince of Wales attended her shows. During her time at the Royal Aquarium, music was used to make the show even better. A musical director named Charles Dubois even wrote special waltzes just for her. She was a true professional who could perform her difficult routines twice in a single day.

Even though she was a star, her life was not always easy. Many people in England worried about her safety and asked leaders to stop the dangerous stunts. Richter faced several accidents during her long career, including a bad fall in 1879. This happened because a net was in poor condition and she fell through it. These hard moments led her to spend time later in life promoting the use of safety nets. She also showed her love for art by starting an opera company with her husband. Her life shows how much skill and bravery it takes to be a performer.
