One specific leader became very famous. People believe he lived around the year 1600. He is often just called Roi Mata. This name can be a bit confusing for readers. It is the same name used for the chiefs before him.

Legend tells us how this famous chief lived. He first conquered the land in the islands. His first goal was to unite the different tribes. He wanted to form a strong army. His time as a leader was known as peaceful.

This leader had a very sudden and sad end. His own brother poisoned him. Because of this, people felt a great fear. They did not use his name for many years. They were afraid of his spirit. His body was not buried in his own homeland.

Finding the grave was a big job for a scientist. A French archaeologist named Garanger looked for the site. He did not find it by luck alone. He studied local folklore to help him. Folklore is a collection of traditional stories.

These stories helped him locate the grave on Eretoka island. He finally found the site in 1967. This discovery helped people learn about the past. It showed how much history lives in local stories.

The grave was a very large and special place. It was an elaborate burial site. It contained the bodies of over 25 people. These people were part of his retinue. A retinue is a group that stays with a leader.

This mass burial was a key part of the find. The site shows how important the chief was. It also shows how his people honored him. Each person in the grave was connected to his life.

Today, these important places are protected for everyone. In 2008, they became UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This means they are special to the whole world.
