He studies the deep rules of our universe. One of his big ideas is about black holes. He showed that black holes must form when stars collapse. This discovery helped him win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2020.

Penrose also loves shapes and patterns. He made the Penrose triangle. This is a shape that looks impossible to the eye.

He also found a way to tile a flat surface using special shapes. These patterns are called Penrose tilings. They do not repeat in a simple way. This work helped scientists understand how atoms sit in some crystals.

He even thinks about how our minds work. In his book, *The Emperor's New Mind*, he explores consciousness. He believes current physics cannot yet explain how we think. Penrose also looks at the very beginning of time. He studies if there was a universe before our Big Bang. He uses math to search for these big answers.
