Sir Roger Penrose is a famous mathematician and physicist.

He studies the deep rules that make our universe work. His work covers many different areas of science. He looks at shapes, space, and even how we think. This wide range of study has earned him many honors. He is a professor at the University of Oxford.

One of his most important ideas is about black holes.

He used math to show that black holes must form. He studied what happens when a dying star collapses. This discovery was a big part of his work. In 2020, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for this. He also shared the Wolf Prize in Physics in 1988. This prize was shared with the scientist Stephen Hawking.

Penrose also enjoys creating amazing visual puzzles.

In the 1950s, he created the Penrose triangle. This shape looks impossible to the human eye. He worked on this idea with his father. The artist M. C. Escher was also inspired by these ideas. Escher used them in his famous art pieces. Penrose also found a special way to cover flat surfaces.

Penrose Tiling (Rhombi)
Penrose Tiling (Rhombi)

These are called Penrose tilings. They use two shapes to make a pattern that never repeats.

He has written many books to explain his big ideas.

In 1989, he wrote *The Emperor's New Mind*. This book explores the mystery of human consciousness. He thinks current physics cannot fully explain how we think. In 2004, he released *The Road to Reality*. This is a very long guide to the laws of the universe. It covers his own theories about how everything works.

Penrose even looks back to the very beginning of time.

WMAP 2010

He studies the Big Bang and what happened before it. He has a theory called conformal cyclic cosmology. This theory suggests there might have been an earlier universe. He uses data from tools like the WMAP to look for clues. He believes the Big Bang might not be the very start. Instead, it might be a link to a previous cycle of time.
