Edward Witten is a very important American scientist. He is a theoretical physicist who studies the rules of our universe. This means he uses math to figure out how space and time work. He is a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Many people call him a founder of M-theory.

He is known for solving some of the hardest puzzles in science. Some famous scientists even compared his mind to great thinkers like Isaac Newton.

One of his biggest ideas helped connect different parts of science. In the mid-1990s, scientists had five different versions of string theory. String theory is the idea that tiny strings make up everything. At a conference in 1995, Witten suggested these were not five separate things. He said they were all part of one single theory called M-theory. This idea changed how people thought about the building blocks of our world.

Witten is also a master of mathematics. In 1990, he won the Fields Medal from the International Mathematical Union. This is a very special prize for math experts. He was the first physicist to ever win this award. He used his math skills to study things like knots and shapes. He also proved the positive energy theorem in 1981. This theorem helps explain how gravity and energy work together in space.

His life has been full of learning and discovery. He was born on August 26, 1951, in Baltimore, Maryland. His father, Louis Witten, was also a physicist who studied gravity. Edward went to Brandeis University to study history and linguistics first. Later, he went to Princeton University to earn his PhD in physics in 1976. He worked with many famous people, including David Gross.

You can see how his work connects different worlds. He links the tiny world of quantum physics to the huge world of gravity. This is often called the study of quantum gravity. He also uses math to understand how things move and change. His work with others has helped us understand the shape of space. Even though his math is very deep, it helps us see the big picture of the universe.
