She was born in 1900. Mary studied math at Oxford. She was the first woman to get a top grade there. Later, she went to Cambridge to do more work. She solved a hard math puzzle at Cambridge. This work became known as Cartwright's theorem.

In 1938, Mary started a new project. She worked with a man named J. E. Littlewood. They studied math used for radio and radar. They looked at how waves move. They found strange patterns. These patterns are part of chaos theory. Chaos theory studies how small changes can make big effects. This is often called the butterfly effect. Their work helped engineers fix tools. It helped them deal with electrical noise.

Mary won many big prizes. In 1947, she became a Fellow of the Royal Society. She was the first female mathematician to get this honor. She also led many math groups. In 1969, the Queen honored her. She became Dame Mary Cartwright. She lived to be 97 years old.
