One way to see a twist is a Möbius band. This is a strip of paper with a twist in it. Atiyah helped make a tool called K-theory. This tool helps describe how shapes twist in many ways.

He also worked with Isadore Singer. Together, they made the Atiyah–Singer index theorem. This math helps count solutions to hard equations. Atiyah worked at many great schools. He taught at Oxford and Cambridge. He also worked at the Institute for Advanced Study.

He won the Fields Medal in 1966. He also won the Abel Prize in 2004. These are two of the biggest prizes in math. He helped many students learn math too. His ideas changed how we see the world of shapes.
