Males have shiny green feathers. They also have red bellies. Their long tail feathers can be very long. Females look different. They have duller colors and grey bellies.

Quetzals eat many things. They mostly eat fruit from the laurel family. They swallow the fruit whole. Then they spit out the pits. This helps new trees grow in the forest. They also eat small animals like frogs and snails.

These birds make nests in old, decaying trees. They often use holes made by woodpeckers. The parents take turns sitting on the eggs. Males sit during the day. Females sit at night. The eggs hatch in about 18 days.

The quetzal is the national animal of Guatemala. It is even on their flag. People must protect their forest homes. This helps the quetzal stay safe.
