People show remorse in many ways. They might say they are sorry. This is called an apology. A good apology has a few parts. It explains what happened. It shows that the person knows they caused harm. It also promises to change so it does not happen again. One expert says a great apology needs four things. These are remorse, responsibility, resolution, and reparation. Reparation means trying to fix the damage caused.

Some people do not feel remorse. This can be a sign of psychopathy. A psychopath is a person who does not follow social rules. They often do not feel guilt or empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand how others feel. Studies show that juries in court look for remorse. If a person shows no remorse, the jury may be much harder on them.

Scientists study how we show these feelings. They look at faces and body language. Real remorse often shows with fewer facial changes. People who fake it might act too sad. They might even show happy feelings by mistake. This happens because they feel embarrassed while lying.
