In the past, red wolves lived in many places. They lived from the Atlantic Ocean to Texas. They even lived in parts of Canada. But many red wolves were lost. This happened because of habitat destruction and changes in the land. They also began to breed with coyotes.

To save them, people started a captive-breeding program. This is a way to help animals breed in a safe place. Scientists used 14 red wolves to start this work. In 1987, they released wolves into North Carolina.

The population grew for a while. But then the numbers went down again.

Today, the red wolf is critically endangered. This means there are very few left in the wild. In 2023, there were between 15 and 17 wild red wolves in one area. People are still working hard to help them thrive.
