A recreational vehicle, or RV, is a vehicle designed for living.

These vehicles act as mobile homes for travelers. Some RVs are trailers that a car or truck must pull. Others are motorhomes that you can drive yourself.

Most RVs include a kitchen and a bathroom. They also have beds for sleeping. Some are very basic with just a bed. Others are luxurious with air conditioning and quartz countertops. Large RVs may even have slide-outs to create more space when parked.

There are many ways these vehicles work. Motorhomes can have the engine in the front. If the engine is in the back, it is called a pusher.

Most pushers use diesel fuel for power. Many trailers use a tow hitch attached to a vehicle. A fifth-wheel trailer uses a special coupling above the rear axle. Some trailers are pop-up campers with sides that collapse for travel.

Even truck campers can be used by sitting in the bed of a pickup truck.

History shows how RVs changed over time. The very first recreational vehicles were pulled by horses. In 1884, a man named Dr. Gordon Stables commissioned the Wanderer.

This was the first known RV built just for fun. Later, engines began to replace horses. The first steam-driven motorhome was the Quo Vadis in France in 1900. The first gasoline motorhome was the Passe Partout in 1902. In the United States, the first powered motorhomes appeared between 1904 and 1906. These early models were called camp cars.

Many important facts define the RV world today. In the United States, about one million people live in RVs full-time.

In Indiana, about 85 percent of all RVs sold are made. Much of this happens in Elkhart County. This place is known as the "RV Capital of the World." In October 2021, North America made 58,000 RVs in a single month. This was the highest number ever recorded for one month. The industry in Indiana has a huge economic impact.

Using an RV is a lot like using a house. You can use it for a short camping trip. Some people use it as their main home.

You can even use solar panels to get power from the sun. This helps people work remotely while traveling. In Australia, people who travel in RVs are called "grey nomads." Whether for fun or for living, RVs provide a way to move through the world.
