A recreational vehicle, often called an RV, is a motor vehicle or trailer designed for living.

These mobile units include living quarters for accommodation while traveling. Most RVs feature essential amenities like a kitchen, a bathroom, and beds. They range from utilitarian models with basic cooking facilities to luxury versions. Luxury RVs may include air conditioning, water heaters, and even quartz countertops.

To increase living space while parked, many large RVs use slide-outs or canopies. These parts expand the interior area once the vehicle is stationary.

RVs are categorized by how they move and how they are built. Some are trailers that must be towed by another vehicle. Others are motorhomes that can be driven themselves. Motorhomes are further divided by engine placement. If the engine is in the front, it is a standard motorhome. If the engine is in the rear, it is called a pusher.

Generally, pushers use diesel fuel, while front-engine models often use gasoline. However, modern trends show more front-engine RVs are now using diesel.

There are several distinct types of trailers and motorhomes. Class A motorhomes are large and built on heavy-duty truck or bus chassis.

Class B motorhomes are semi-integrated and typically use vans with elevated roofs. Class C motorhomes, or alcove models, are built on cutaway pickup or van chassis. These often feature a bunk area located over the cab.

Other types include fifth-wheel trailers, which use a coupling centered above the rear axle. Some fifth-wheels are massive semi-trailers reaching 57 feet in length. There are also pop-up campers with collapsible sides and truck campers that sit in a pickup bed.

The history of the RV began with horse-drawn vehicles. Many early versions were adapted from stage wagons, living vans, or even ambulance wagons. In 1884, Dr. Gordon Stables commissioned the Wanderer in the UK. This was the first known purpose-built RV.

Stables helped start the Gentlemen Gypsy movement, which promoted leisure caravanning. This movement inspired the formation of The Caravan Club in 1907. As automobiles became cheaper after World War I, horse-drawn versions declined. The first steam-driven motorhome, the Quo Vadis, appeared in France in 1900. The first gasoline-driven motorhome, the Passe Partout, followed in 1902.

The RV industry is a massive economic force, especially in the United States. About 85 percent of RVs sold in the U.S. are manufactured in Indiana. Much of this production happens in Elkhart County, known as the "RV Capital of the World."

The industry in Indiana has a $32.4 billion annual economic impact. It supports 126,140 jobs and provides $7.8 billion in wages. In October 2021, North American manufacturing reached a record high of 58,000 units in a single month. This surge was driven by increased demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

People use RVs for many different lifestyles. Many use them for temporary accommodation during road trips to avoid hotels. However, some use them as their primary residence. In the United States, approximately one million people live full-time in RVs.

In Australia, retired people who travel in RVs are known as "grey nomads." Some owners use solar panels to live off the electrical grid. This allows for remote work while traveling. However, using RVs can impact the environment. They are significant emitters of air pollutants and consume large amounts of tropical wood for manufacturing.

Modern RV technology connects to broader social and economic systems. The industry relies on complex supply chains for parts like electronics and plumbing. Changes in trade, such as tariffs on steel and aluminum, can raise prices for consumers.

Despite these challenges, interest remains high. Recent research shows more millennials are interested in RVs for outdoor recreation. This shift reflects changing trends in how people view travel, housing, and connection to the outdoors.
