A mobile home is a special kind of house. It is a prefabricated structure, which means it is built in a factory.

Builders make the home on a strong frame called a chassis. This frame has axles, wheels, and tow-hitches. These parts allow the home to be moved to a new place.

People use them as permanent homes or for holidays. Some people live in them for just a short time. They can be moved if the law requires it.

There are different ways these homes are made and moved. Single-wide homes are 8 feet or less in width. They are short enough to be towed by a car.

Double-wide homes are much larger. They are at least 20 feet wide and up to 50 feet long. These are moved in two separate units. Then, the two parts are joined together at the site. Some builders even make triple-wide or larger homes. These very large homes usually need a professional trucking company to move them.

Mobile homes have an interesting history in the United States. They started from travel trailers used for camping. In the early years, people used them to travel and move around. Everything changed in the 1950s. Companies began selling them as an inexpensive way to live in one place. In 1956, a new type of wide home was introduced. These were called "ten-wide" homes. They used rectangular aluminum panels instead of the curvy shapes of travel trailers. This helped people see the difference between a traveling trailer and a home.

Since June 1976, these homes have specific rules in the United States. They are legally called manufactured homes.

The government uses the HUD to set safety standards. These rules help homes stay strong in bad weather. For example, Florida has different wind zones. South Florida is a wind zone 3 area.

After Hurricane Andrew in 1992, new construction standards were made. These rules help the homes stay safe during big storms. Many manufactured homes are now built to be very durable.

Many people live in mobile home parks. These are communities where you rent a space for your home.

There are over 38,000 of these parks in the United States. Most parks provide things like water, electricity, and gas. Some parks even have pools or playgrounds for the neighbors. Some communities are just for people who are 55 or older. Other parks are for people on summer vacations. These parks make it easy to live in a community with others.
