life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Buttercups belong to a huge group of plants called Ranunculus. This group contains about 1,750 different species. You might know them as buttercups, spearworts, or water crowfoots. Most of these plants live in temperate or mountain areas. They grow on almost every continent except for Antarctica.

Many buttercups have a very special way of working. Their petals are often bright yellow, white, or green. The top surface of the petal is extremely smooth. This smoothness creates a mirror-like reflection that shines in the light. This flash helps attract insects that pollinate the flowers. The shine also helps regulate the temperature of the flower's reproductive parts.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. Theodore Dru Alison Cockerell found a potential old fossil in 1922. This fossil was found in the Florissant Formation of Colorado. Other fossils have been found in Germany and China. Some fossils were even found in the Transantarctic Mountains. These fossils show that the plants have been around for a very long time.

Buttercups can be tricky to grow in a garden. Some species like the creeping buttercup have very tough roots. The bulbous buttercup and the tall meadow buttercup are also common. People often call them weeds when they grow in gardens. Some species, called water crowfoots, grow in still or running water. They have thin leaves underwater and wider leaves that float on top.

It is important to remember that these plants are poisonous. They can make humans and animals very sick if eaten. The plant contains a substance that can cause skin irritation. This happens when the plant is handled. The small fruits of the plant are called achenes. These achenes can be smooth, hairy, or have tiny spines.
