geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Rajarhat is a significant neighborhood located in India. It sits within the North 24 Parganas district. This area is part of the state of West Bengal. It also falls under the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, or KMDA. The KMDA manages this large metropolitan region. Rajarhat serves as a vital part of this urban system. It has become a major hub for the IT industry. This means many technology companies operate in this area.

The development of Rajarhat followed a specific timeline. The state government of West Bengal first conceptualized the area in the 1990s. They began the design and development phases later. Most of the physical building occurred during the 2000s and 2010s. Throughout the 2010s, the area grew into a major IT hub. This growth transformed the local landscape and economy. The planned development helped create a modern urban center.

Administrative structures manage the daily life in Rajarhat. The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation oversees the entire region. This corporation consists of 41 different wards. The area is also under the jurisdiction of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. This police body ensures safety and order for the residents. Local governance is organized to handle the needs of a growing population. The merger of different groups helped create this modern system.

A major change occurred in the administration on June 18, 2015. On this date, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation was officially constituted. This new body was formed by merging three distinct areas. These were the Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality and the Bidhannagar Municipality. They also included the panchayat area of Mahishbathan II Gram Panchayat. This merger created a larger, unified governing body. It was originally suggested to be named the Bidhannagar-Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipal Corporation.

Rajarhat is composed of many different local areas. These localities include Kestopur and Baguiati. Other parts of the region are Teghoria and Kaikhali. Gopalpur is another important locality within this zone. A portion of the NSCBI Airport is also nearby. These areas are all connected under the municipal corporation. They form a complex network of neighborhoods within the district.

Demographic data provides a picture of the people living here. According to the 2011 census, the Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality was quite large. It had a total population of 402,844 persons. The population was divided between different genders. Males constituted 50.55% of the total population. Females made up 49% of the people living there. These numbers show a large and diverse community.

Education is also a notable feature of this population. The Rajarhat-Gopalpur area has a high literacy rate. This rate was measured at 89.69% during the 2011 census. Literacy refers to the ability to read and write. Such a high percentage suggests a well-educated community. This educational level supports the area's role as a technology hub. A skilled workforce is essential for the IT industry to thrive.
