Panihati is a significant city and municipality located in the North 24 Parganas district. It sits within the Indian state of West Bengal. The city is a vital part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. This region is managed by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, or KMDA. The city is situated at an average elevation of 13 metres. It is positioned on B.T. Road, which is a major transport route. The municipality also holds jurisdiction over several other areas. These include Sukchar, Sodepur, Natagarh, Panshila, Ghola, and Agarpara.

The geography of Panihati is defined by its many neighbors. To the north, it is bounded by Bandipur, Iswaripur, and Karna Madhabpur. The eastern borders meet Manish Pota, Bilkanda, Jugberia, Muragachha, and Teghari. To the south, it touches North Dumdum and Kamarhati. Khardaha forms the western boundary. The area is part of the Barrackpore subdivision. In this subdivision, 96% of the population lives in urban areas. In 2011, the population density reached 10,967 people per square kilometre.

History offers several layers of meaning to this location. Legend suggests Maharaja Chandraketu of Deganga built a garh, or fort, here in the 13th century. This fort is associated with the goddess Bhawani. In earlier times, river transport was the main way to travel. This made Panihati a major centre for trade and business. It was then known as Pannyahati, meaning an emporium for merchandise. The name may have come from the word Pannyahatic. Many religious texts mention the city. These include the Chaitanya Mangal Kavya and the Sri Chaitanya Charitamritam. Gaudiya Vaishnavas consider the site holy. They believe Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and his associate Nityananda visited the area.

Modern history is also deeply connected to Panihati. In 1921, Satish Chandra Dasgupta established the Gandhi Memorial Asram. This site is also known as Sodepur Khadi Pratisthan. Mahatma Gandhi visited and stayed at this location several times. His visits occurred in 1939, 1945, 1946, and 1947. The municipality itself was officially established in 1900. This long history shows how the city has changed from a trading post to a modern urban centre.

The economy of Panihati is driven by several large industries.
