The history of Kamarhati shows how much the area has changed over time. Originally, it was part of the North Suburban Municipality. In the period of 1881-82, this was renamed the Baranagar Municipality. Kamarhati remained part of that group until 1899. In that year, it was separated to become the Kamarhati Municipality. During the British Raj, the area was known for its beautiful gardens and bungalows. Wealthy people, often called 'Babus' from Kolkata, used the area for leisure. This era of quiet gardens changed drastically in 1947. During the partition of Bengal, millions of refugees arrived from what was then East Pakistan.

These refugees changed the social structure of the region through a process called squatting. In Bengali, this is known as jabardakhal. This involved the occupation of various spaces, such as barracks or government land. Because official help for housing was not always available, many refugees became "self-settlers." They took over land to create their own living spaces. By 1949, there were 65 refugee colonies in the Dum Dum and Panihati zones. These groups did more than just build homes. They quickly developed complete societies. They established their own markets, schools, temples, and even hospitals and colleges.

Today, Kamarhati is a densely populated urban center. In 2011, the total population was 330,211 people. Of this total, 170,293 were males and 159,918 were females. The population density was very high at 10,967 people per square kilometer. The city covers a total area of 10.96 square kilometers. Literacy rates in the city are quite high. In 2011, the literacy rate was 87.67% for those over six years old. This was significantly higher than the national average of 59.5%. The city's infrastructure supports this large population through many roads and drains. There are 268.95 kilometers of roads, most of which are pucca, or paved.

The economy of Kamarhati is driven by several large industrial companies. The city hosts Texmaco Rail and Engineering Limited, which operates five manufacturing units. This company was founded in 1939 by K.K. Birla. Another historic site is the Kamarhatty Company Limited. Founded in 1877, it is one of the oldest functioning composite jute mills in the world. Other notable industries include NTC Industries Limited, which has manufactured cigarettes since 1931. There is also TIL Limited, which produces material handling and lifting equipment. Additionally, Emami Paper Mills Limited produces newsprint from waste paper. These industries connect the local economy to both Indian and foreign markets.

Education and healthcare are vital parts of the city's daily life. The city contains a wide variety of schools, including 97 primary schools and 39 secondary schools. There are also two degree colleges for arts, science, and commerce. For higher education, Bhairab Ganguly College offers many specialized courses. Hiralal Mazumdar Memorial College for Women is another important institution. Healthcare is provided by several major facilities. The College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital (CMSDH) began its MBBS medical course in 2011. It currently functions with 131 beds. The ESI Hospital at Kamarhati is even larger, with 350 beds. It provides many services, including surgical and gynecological care.

Transport links make Kamarhati a connected part of the wider region. The B.T. Road passes through the heart of the town and provides road transport. For rail travel, the Agarpara and Belgharia stations are nearby. These stations are on the Sealdah-Ranaghat line within the Eastern Railway suburban network. The city also features a ferry ghat for travel by water. This mix of road, rail, and water transport helps people move through the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. The city remains a complex and busy hub of industry and residence.
