A railway platform is a special area next to a train track.

It helps people get on and off trains very easily. Most stations have at least one platform. Larger stations often have many different ones. Grand Central Terminal in New York City has 44 platforms.

This is more than any other rail station in the world. Some stations are very small, like Benson station in the United States. That platform is only long enough for one single bench.

Platforms come in several different shapes. A bay platform is a dead-end where the track stops.

A train must reverse to leave a bay platform. A side platform is the most common type. A train arrives from one end and leaves from the other. An island platform sits between two tracks.

You might use a bridge or a tunnel to reach it. Some stations even use a "Spanish solution" with platforms on both sides of one track.

Safety is a very important part of how a platform works. Many modern stations use platform screen doors to keep people safe.

These doors sit between the people and the tracks. They also help keep the station warm or cool. Platforms often have a yellow line near the edge.

This line tells passengers to stay back. At curved platforms, there might be a gap between the train and the edge. You might hear a voice say, "Mind the gap."

Platforms also provide many useful things for travelers. You can often find benches, lights, or even small shops.

Some platforms have roofs to protect you from the rain. Many use loudspeakers to tell you about train times or delays.

These systems can tell you if a train is late or if the route has changed. Some platforms even have special security officers to keep everyone safe.

Different countries use different names for these areas. In the United States, people call the structure a platform.

They call the place where the train stops a "track." In the United Kingdom, they use the word platform differently. They use it to mean the specific place where the train stops. This means an island platform might have two different platform numbers. Some countries, like Poland, are now switching how they number them.
