Platforms come in different shapes. A bay platform is a dead-end. Trains must reverse to leave a bay. A side platform is more common. A train arrives from one end and leaves from the other. An island platform has tracks on both sides.

Platforms help keep people safe. Some stations use platform screen doors. These are doors that sit between the people and the tracks. They keep people from falling onto the rails.

Many platforms have a yellow line near the edge. This tells people to stay back. At curved platforms, there might be a gap between the train and the platform. You might hear a voice say, "Mind the gap."

Platforms also have many useful parts. You might find benches, lights, or shops. Some have roofs to keep you dry. They also have signs to show train times.
