A rail yard is a large group of tracks.

These tracks help store, sort, or load rail cars. Many tracks sit side by side. This keeps cars off the main line. It lets other trains move through easily.

Small engines called switchers move the cars.

Workers sort cars by where they go. They may sort by company or car type. Some yards have a big hill. This is called a hump. Engines push cars up the hill. Then, the cars roll down by gravity.

Special brakes called retarders slow the cars down.

This helps cars join new trains gently. This way, they do not get damaged. Some yards are for freight. Others are coach yards for passenger cars.
