In modern hump and gravity yards, automation plays a massive role in efficiency. These yards use mechanical retarders, which act as external brakes, to control the speed of rolling cars. Operators or computers use these retarders along with scales and knowledge of the hill's gradient to manage the cars. This technology allows a first car to roll to a stop at the end of a classification track. Subsequent cars are then slowed down so they can bump and couple gently with the first car. This prevents damage to the equipment. Many yards also use pneumatic, hydraulic, or spring-driven braking retarders to adjust speeds near switch points.
