Before he became a famous leader, Karadžić faced some legal trouble. In 1984, he and a partner were arrested for fraud. They were accused of using a loan to build houses for themselves. This happened in a town called Pale. A court sentenced him to three years in prison in 1985. However, he did not serve the time because he had already spent a year in detention. Later, he moved into politics with help from others. He helped start the Serb Democratic Party in 1989. This party wanted to protect the interests of Bosnian Serbs.

In 1992, the Bosnian War began. This was a very difficult time for the people in the region. Karadžić was elected as the president of Republika Srpska. This was the administration for the Bosnian Serb people. As president, he had a lot of authority. He could command the army and choose its officers. He even tried to take personal command of the military in 1995. During this time, he traveled to places like Moscow and New York. He even visited the United Nations to talk about the future of Bosnia.

Later, a special court called the ICTY investigated his actions. The court said Karadžić was responsible for many terrible things. These included war crimes and crimes against humanity. The court also said he was responsible for the genocide in Srebrenica. This means he was linked to the deaths of more than 7,500 Bosniaks. Because of these actions, the United States offered a $5 million reward to find him. Karadžić managed to hide from the law for a long time. He lived in Belgrade using a fake name while working at a clinic.

At first, they sentenced him to 40 years in prison. He asked the court to look at the decision again. In 2019, the court rejected his appeal. They increased his sentence to life imprisonment. Now, he serves his sentence in a prison on the Isle of Wight in Britain. His story shows how leaders can change the course of history through their choices.
